This picture was taken in 1994 at Wimbledon.  In December 2010, Stuart lost his battle, at the age of 52 against ALS after a 12 year courageous fight.

Stuart was an avid tennis player to say the very least. He played on the tennis team in high school at Central in Evansville, IN and in college at Manchester College in Indiana. After graduating he worked as a tennis teaching professional with Peter Burwash International in Kona, Hawaii. He later played tennis in the USTA Southwest league and was ranked 6th.   With the prompting of Paul Harbison, a fellow tennis player, the USTA has renamed the annual senior tournament  The Stuart Bridges Phoenix Senior Open in his honor and memory which took place at the Phoenix Tennis Center on October 20th thru the 23rd, 2011.  This year, 80 USTA League players participated in the tournament.   The net proceeds from the tournament will be donated to ALS TDI.   Thank you to all the players.

“He was an inspiration to me and to all of his tennis friends. I will miss him very much,” said Tom Sertich.   Every week for years Dick Roberson and Stuart played highly competitive tennis matches at the Phoenix Tennis Center... on the same court.... at the same time.  Dick, in November 2002, had court number 8, at the Phoenix Tennis Center officially named "Stuart's Court.  Dick came every week .. same day.... same time...for years, when Stuart was then bed bound,  to visit with Stuart and to talk sports.  If Dick could describe Stuart in one word it would be “awesome.”   Dick's loyalty was also awesome.

Kevin Riley and Stuart worked together and later Stuart became Kevin’s “coach.” They would talk about Kevin’s golf games and how he could improve. “One of my favorite "Stuart-isms" that he kept trying to drive home to me was "Finish with a smile."  I know he left this world with a big smile on his face, knowing how he inspired others.”  Kevin was very devoted to Stuart and the fight against this disease.   Kevin created Team Stuart.

Scott Bridges, Stuart's brother, on a personal note wants to "Thank all of you for giving of your time, energy and love to help Stuart through his very difficult illness. He was fortunate to have so many people willing to give him their help in so many different ways. I miss him very much and feel humbled to have been part of his life. His desire and ability to reach beyond himself was certainly verified by the wonderful letters he received from you and many others.... particularly during these past couple of years. Finally to thank Shawn for her profound commitment to help Stuart in every way possible."

Stuart's family, his sister, Shawn, his brother, Scott and his wife, Mary Jo along with his nephews Andrew and Michael wish to thank everyone involved in the Tennis Tournament this year.
