Steve Buckley's Boston Marathon Run for Pete

I wish I had video highlights of Pete Frates' entire baseball career. If I did, I'd seek out the longest home run he ever hit, the greatest catch he ever made, and the hardest, dirtiest takeout slide he ever made at second base, and then I'd somehow combine them into one rock-'em-sock-em, in-your-face Pete Frates Baseball Moment.

And even then, it would look like a game of backyard ring toss compared with the aggressiveness and determination that Pete is showing in his fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

That's why I'm running this year's Boston Marathon: As he has done with so many others, Pete Frates, a Beverly native and former Boston College baseball captain, has inspired me to help him help find a cure for ALS.

My charity of choice -- recommended by Pete and his family -- is the ALS Therapy Development Institute of Cambridge.

TDI is the world’s largest ALS-dedicated drug development organization. With 30 full-time, industry trained, drug development experts on staff, the nonprofit institute screens 25-30 compounds a year, and has screened more than 300 compounds since its inception in 1999. Rated a four-star charity by CharityNavigator.com, more than 86% of each dollar raised is spent directly on the Institute’s mission: to discover and develop effective treatments to end ALS.

Pete Frates is the poster boy of "Don't Give Up." He and his wife Julie are expecting a baby in September, yet that hasn't stopped him from participating in a variety of ALS-related events -- all while continuing to undergo his own therapy and treatment for this terrible disease.

My goal is to raise $5,000 for TDI, and I'm counting on you -- my beloved friends, family members and co-workers -- to help Pete Frates and others who are fighting ALS.

See you at the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday, April 21. (Alas, very late in the day, as the tumbleweeds are blowing through Copley Square . . .)
