Good Day ~

My name is Casey ‘Aqua-Man’ Owen, and I am planning a Thru-Hike of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2015.  During my hike, I have decided to support Augie’s Quest in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

What is my connection to this disease?

In the Summer of 2003, my Grandfather; Dr. James Earnest Owen Sr. was beginning to have problems with his legs and feet.  At the age of 74, we weren’t sure what was going on with him, but found later in the year that he had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  At the time of his diagnosis, my Uncle Steve was told by the doctors that the disease would most likely be much more aggressive due to my Grandfathers age.  Our family began to struggle with his decline over the following 18 months he carried this disease, ultimately leading to him passing away in his home in Bessemer, AL on January 7th, 2005.  My Grandfather was an educator most all of his life - an intelligent man, whose life touched many others.  His passing was a difficult thing for the family to endure, and he is still missed to this day.

In 2013, I backpacked the Appalachian Trail, and worked toward raising awareness and financial aid for A.L.S. as a memory of my Grandfather.  While I prepared for my hike; I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting and getting to spend time with; Mr. and Mrs. Don Wothe, Debbie Wothe Curtis and some of their family.  Don had been diagnosed with ALS for approximately two years, but was willing for me to come in and speak with him, get to know his story and create a relationship and connection with he and his wife.  I will always remember the life that Don had in his eyes, the wisdom in his conversations and his eagerness to share his story with me.  Don passed a year ago this past March, but I will never forget how much the connection, although brief, meant to me.

Today, as I prepare for my 2,663 mile journey on the West Coast - I ask you to come along with me, be a part of this experience and help by spreading the word, volunteering some of your time, or by simply providing a financial contribution to help with fighting this life changing disease.

Thank you for your consideration, love and support ~
