Become a FundraiserJon Ferraiolo, a loving husband and wonderful father to three daughters, was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, in July 2014. For a year prior, he had experienced unexplained speech difficulty. Friends and family were devastated to learn the news that Jon had ALS. He had always been such a go-to person for the family, someone you could turn to for moral support, a funny story or a partner who could carry you in tennis.
Before his retirement this year, Jon worked in Advanced Technology as a Distinguished Engineer for IBM. Formerly a software architect with Adobe, he is considered the godfather of the open-source web standard called Scalable Vector Graphics, or SVG. Today SVG is embedded in every browser and smartphone, enabling dynamic vector graphics that make the web experience richer and more user-friendly.
Jon appears to have a slow-progressing form of ALS but is experiencing significant fatigue and continued muscle weakness. We pray that he will beat the 3-5 year life expectancy of most persons with ALS (PALS). What keeps us going is the hope of a cure to save Jon and others who suffer from the same cruel disease.
Our bet for ALS research is the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). This is a nonprofit biotech research organization dedicated to finding a cure for ALS. Their cutting-edge research is inspiring hope for so many PALS and their loved ones. Jon is part of their amazing ALS Precision Medicine study.
