Ray's Als Relay Run Across America

Contact
Steven Luther

My name is Steven Luther and it wasn't until after my father, Raymond Luther, died on January 13, 2012 from ALS that I discovered ALS TDI. Unfortunately during the time my father was sick, my family and I didn't have time to do a lot of research. He was diagnosed in September 2011 and passed a short four month later. The Summer of 2013 I ran a 5K race in Rochester, NY on Fathers Day, put on by MedVed to raise money for ALS TDI. I contacted Mort Nace who put on the race and asked who his contact person was because I had an idea how to raise money and awareness for ALS TDI. I made contact with Jillian Davis from ALS TDI and I entered into the ALS TDI Family.
Ray's Als Relay Run Across America came about because I am a runner and my father was also a runner back in the 70's and 80's. In the summer of 1982 my father and 15 other men all over the age of 50, ran from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to Coney Island in New York City. At the time they did the run to raise money for a local children's hospital in Rochester, NY. I have run Marathons, Half-Marathons and I have run a number of Trail Races. I have the support of family, friends and loved ones.
To honor my father and to raise money and awareness for this terrible disease, I had planned on doing the same run in July 2016. Unfortunately I was unable to get enough runners to committ 20 days to run accross the country. So I changed the run. We are now running from Rochester, NY to Boston, MA (actually Cambridge) to the front door of ALS TDI. We are leaving Rochester on July 23, 2016 and will be at ALS TDI on July 25, 2016 somewhere around 3:00 pm.
The run itself will take approximately 2.5 days and we will be running 24 hours a day. Each runner will run 4 miles at a time, handing off to another runner for their 4 miles and so on, 24 hours a day. This is how my father and his buddies did it in 1982. Between this Community page, Twitter, Facebook and my webpage, I will be able to update everyone as to how things are progressing and eventually will have a detailed route laid out for the run.
